TTFB by Sector

Average time to first byte across each industry, with estimated revenue loss for a site doing $10k/mo in revenue.

What the data reveals

82%
of scanned sites have a TTFB above Google's 200ms recommendation — leaving significant SEO and conversion performance on the table.
$4,200
average annual revenue loss estimated for a $10k/mo ecommerce site operating at the industry average TTFB of 780ms.
4.6×
faster — the speed difference between the top 10% of sites and the bottom 25%. The gap is almost entirely hosting infrastructure.
68%
of slow sites (TTFB >800ms) are on shared hosting with price-lock-free plans that increased over 300% at renewal. Speed and price both suffer.

Methodology & Data Notes

Industry averages based on anonymized TTFB measurements collected via cache-busted HTTP GET requests from FutureStack's scanner infrastructure, 3-sample averaged per run (round 1 discarded, rounds 2–3 averaged). Measurements taken from a single geographic origin point. Revenue loss estimates use a conservative model: each 100ms of excess latency above 200ms correlates to approximately 0.4% conversion rate decline (4% per second, capped at 40%), applied to a $10,000/month baseline. Hosting provider detection is based on HTTP server response headers and is approximate — shared hosts may serve sites across multiple infrastructure tiers. Data collected January–August 2026. *Revenue estimates are illustrative and vary significantly by site type, traffic, and industry.
